My family’s estates had been lost during the war. And so, immediately after German reunification, I applied again to the Treuhand for forest land in East Germany. Having often come away empty-handed as a ‘runner-up’, in 1994 I won the tender for a forestry operation in the southern Harz Mountains, right next to the town of Stolberg/Harz.

Thanks to my education and career, I’d seen a lot of the world and lived on three continents, yet I’d remained rootless. All the while, I’d been searching for a special place where I wanted to settle down. Upon arriving in the low mountain range of the southern Harz, amidst the rustling leaves of the red beech forests, I discovered my region, which offers so much more than just nature – alongside tranquillity, shelter and vast open spaces, there is always something new to discover.

It was right here that I found the place I would like to call home – situated in the heart of Germany.

Sustainability does not mean doing without, but rather the intelligent use of resources. And the forest’s embrace has not only shaped this understanding, but also given rise to the desire: 
to share this place with others, to show guests and friends the beauty and fascination of the region, and to bring it to life for them. ‘My’ home – not just for me.

We are convinced that the Südharz-Kyffhäuser region will become one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Germany over the coming years. 
The wealth of authentic nature experiences, historical traces and cultural treasures is more than just a beautiful legacy – it is an invitation to our future.
